Inner Ring: High corrosion-resistand bronze with tungsten Carbide, provides a smooth running surface for lip seals, reducing friction and wear.
Fasteners: 316 Stainless steel, secure mounting and positioning on the stern tube housing.
Ports: Multiple precision-drilled holes, air/lubricating oil passages for the air balancing system.
Working Principle
This component is part of an air-balanced stern tube seal system, operating as follows:
Multiple lip seals divide the stern tube into seawater side, air chamber, and oil side.
Compressed air is supplied to the air chamber through the drilled passages in the bronze housing, creating a pressure cushion higher than the surrounding seawater pressure.
A small amount of air bubbles continuously escapes to the seawater side, dynamically balancing seawater pressure and preventing ingress.
On the oil side, lubricating oil pressure acts in the opposite direction to prevent oil leakage. The system automatically adjusts air pressure based on vessel draft to minimize seal wear.
